Degree Programmes

JTS currently offers eight (8) undergraduate and two (2) postgraduate degree programmes. Four of the undergraduate degrees (BA Theology, Social Work, Guidance & Counselling and General Studies) have been accredited by the UCJ. The other four undergraduate degrees and the two Masters degrees are awaiting accreditation, having been launched in August 2010, 2012 and 2013. They are: Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Studies, Bachelor of Arts in Social and Professional Transformation and Bachelor of Arts in Music & Media (2010); Bachelor of Arts Applied Behaviour Analysis (2012); Master of Arts Public Theology and Master of Arts Bible (2013). Each degree is further outlined below:

Undergraduate Degrees

  • 2 Minors: Leadership & Ministry, Guidance & Counselling
  • Career Opportunities: Pastor, Youth Worker, Christian Education Ministry, Missionary, Guidance Counsellor, Human Resource, Mediation / Arbitration, Victim Support, Sports Ministry, Journalism, Life Coach, Chaplain, Lecturer. Students who have completed the Theology programme have gone on to do graduate level studies in the areas of Ethics, Theology, Apologetics, Philosophy, Counselling and Psychology.
  • Credits: 120 Credit Hours
  • 180 hours of practical training
  • Programme Length: – 4 years full-time or part-time (part-time must include summers). This may be reduced if the applicant has certification at the level of CAPE/A’ Levels and higher.
  • Requirements: 5 CSEC (CXC) or 5 GCE or the equivalent (SSC, Certificate, etc.); English Language is compulsory (Grade I or II required).

The ABA programme is the type of undergraduate degree that will give students a solid foundation in theory and experience and prepare them for diverse careers upon graduation, including working with:

  • Organisations in Organisational Behaviour Management
  • Children with a variety of disabilities

  • Animals

As the first of its kind in the Caribbean, this programme is unique, combining dual fields of Special Education and Applied Behaviour Analysis, thus meeting the vision of changing the world, one life at a time. Graduates of this programme will be:

  • Prepared to fill needed service demands in schools, homes and community settings
  • Trained to consult in the assessment, design, implementation and evaluation of behavioural interventions for a variety of learners

Students completing the Bachelors of Arts in Applied Behavior Analysis will be eligible to sit the Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA) certification exam with the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB).  The BCaBA is an undergraduate level certification in behaviour analysis.  Students must complete coursework that covers the required content outlined in the BACB’s Fourth Edition Task List and complete 1000 hours of supervised fieldwork experience that complies with the Experience Standards in order to sit the certification exam.  Students who gain certification at the BCaBA level should not practice independently but under the supervision of someone certified at the Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) level or doctoral level (BCBA-D).

Admission Requirements:

  • Minimum of 5 CXC and/ or GCE subjects (grades 1-3/A – C including English Language and Math)

Post Graduate Degrees

Post Graduate Degree Programmes at JTSThe Jamaica Theological Seminary offers two (2) Masters of Arts (by Research) degrees for students desirous of completing further studies in preparation for careers in academia, Christian ministry and / or ethical service in the private or public sphere. In order to matriculate into the programme, prospective students must already possess:

  • A first degree, preferably in Bible, theology or a related field
  • Demonstrate competence in NT Greek if s/he is pursuing the MA in Bible (competence in Biblical Hebrew is a definite asset).

Students will be required to complete thirty-six (36) credits of study, nine (9) of which will be a research thesis, to be completed in the final semester. Full-time students will be required to complete nine (9) credits of study each semester over two years of study.

Classes have a heavy emphasis on research, with students attending three to four weeks of lectures in each course, followed by independent research and student presentations conducted under the guidance of the professors. Students will be required to successfully complete courses captioned under the following headings: Master’s Core (15), Specialization Core (12), and Specialization Options (9).

Master’s Core Courses include: Biblical / Theological, Ethics Research Methods and Thesis.
