Why Social Work

“The purpose of the social work profession is to promote human and community wellbeing. Guided by a person and environment construct, a global perspective, respect for human diversity, and knowledge based on scientific inquiry, social work’s purpose is actualized through its quest for social and economic justice, the prevention of conditions that limit human rights, the elimination of poverty, and the enhancement of the quality of life for all persons” (EPAS Preamble, 2015}.

JTS Social Work Department Mission Statements:

The Department of Social Work and Sociology aims to maintain the foundation of the school’s Christian ethos; to develop social workers, both entry level and advanced practitioners, who will glorify God through service, advocacy and empowerment of individuals, groups, organizations and communities, for micro, mezzo and macro systems, both locally and globally. Graduates will have the competency to engage in evidence based- social work practices that will promote social, economic and environmental justice and embrace diversity, human rights and respect for all individuals

Programme Philosophy

In keeping with the mission of the Jamaica Theological Seminary, social work graduates are prepared to glorify God through service of the diverse geographic in the Kingston region and beyond. In fact, glorifying God through service both locally and internationally is central to our philosophy. Our mission and core values are the foundations of our beliefs and provide an orientation to the way in which social workers serve others and in which the profession is understood and practiced. Social Workers impact individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities. They influence policies that affect systems and embraces the strength-based approach which can be used to promote health, wellness, resiliency, equity, and justice to all.

Bachelor of Social Work (BSW)

The BSW program is designed to equip students with the knowledge, competence and skills to address the needs of individuals, groups, families and communities at risk in the local, national and global context.

Master of Social Work (MSW)

The MSW program is designed to equip students with the skills and competence of a professional social worker. It provides students with a broad orientation to the field, equipping them to make a difference in serving vulnerable and marginalized individuals, families, groups, and communities. The specialist track allows students to concentrate on developing skills and competence in either clinical or community social work practice.
