Pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Guidance and Counselling at Jamaica Theological Seminary.

DEPARTMENT OF GUIDANCE AND COUNSELLING

Department Of Guidance And Counselling

Programme Overview

The field of Guidance and Counselling began in the late 1800s with a focus on vocational guidance but evolved to address broader psychological and social issues. Jamaica Theological Seminary (JTS) played a pioneering role in this area locally, introducing it as part of its theology degree in 1994. However, due to Ministry of Education requirements, this approach shifted, and in 2004, JTS launched a full Bachelor of Arts in Guidance and Counselling programme to meet the increasing demand for trained counsellors in schools.

The programme was developed through needs assessments and aligns with national plans to place counsellors across all educational levels. It recognises Jamaica’s challenging socio-economic environment and seeks to equip students with clinical and holistic skills—spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical—for effective intervention and support.

Although tailored for schools, the programme’s competencies are applicable both locally and internationally and serve as a foundation for further studies in related fields.

Philosophy:

The programme takes an integrative approach, addressing the full spectrum of human development while instilling professionalism and ethical standards. It aims to produce well-rounded professionals ready to serve in diverse counselling or support role
